Choir Coaching & Masterclasses

The Working Voice Practice · Owen Butcher

Specialist workshops in vocal health, voice care, and ensemble craft — for choirs, professional ensembles, conservatoires, and festivals.

About

I lead workshops and masterclasses in two complementary areas: specialist sessions in vocal health and voice care, drawing on my training as a Vocal Health First Aider, qualified Laryngeal Manual Therapy practitioner, and current Vocal Habilitation Professional candidate; and ensemble sessions focused on choral craft, repertoire, and creative performance.

I bring the same voice-specialist focus to group work that I bring to my one-to-one practice. The result is workshop content that's grounded in current voice science, practical for working singers, and — where relevant — informed by my own performing life as Tenor 2 with the Grammy-winning vocal group The Swingles.

Specialist Workshops

These sessions draw directly on my training in vocal health, voice care, and laryngeal manual therapy. They are most often booked by festivals, conservatoires, professional ensembles, and ensembles preparing demanding repertoire or extended performance runs.

Vocal Health and Efficiency for Choirs

The flagship specialist workshop.

A practical, evidence-based session helping choirs sing with greater freedom, longevity, and efficiency. Drawing on current voice science and clinical practice, we work through how the voice actually functions under sustained ensemble demand, where common patterns of strain develop, and how to build sustainable technique that lasts across rehearsals, runs, and tours.

Particularly valuable for ensembles preparing intensive repertoire, touring schedules, or extended performance commitments.

Vocal Self-Care for the Working Singer

A workshop in practical voice care, drawing on principles from my training in Laryngeal Manual Therapy at the Voice Care Centre. Singers learn guided self-massage techniques for the jaw, neck, and shoulders, awareness-based work for recognising tension patterns, and recovery routines for use across a working week.

This session provides participants with a self-care toolkit, grounded in voice science and trauma-aware practice, that they can take home and use independently.

Vocal Massage and the Singing Voice: An Introduction

For singers, choir directors, and vocal coaches curious about vocal massage as a modality — what it is, what it treats, what the underlying principles are, and how it fits within wider voice care. Drawing on my training in Laryngeal Manual Therapy at the Voice Care Centre, this workshop combines clear explanation of the science and clinical reasoning with practical guided self-massage that singers can take home and use.

Participants leave with a working understanding of how muscular tension affects the voice, a toolkit of self-massage techniques for jaw, neck, and shoulders, and a clear sense of when professional treatment may be worth seeking.

Not a training in vocal massage — for that, please see the Voice Care Centre's Vocal Massage Training programme.

Ensemble Workshops

Sessions focused on choral craft, ensemble work, and creative performance. Suitable for choirs and ensembles of all levels — from community groups to professional ensembles.

Sing Smarter, Not Harder

A masterclass session giving choirs the opportunity to explore their existing repertoire in new and exciting ways. Detailed, open-minded work and feedback that elevates performance without exhausting the voice. Adaptable to any ensemble level and any repertoire.

Working As A Choir

Focuses on tuning, timing, and trust — helping singers understand their role within the ensemble, and to breathe, listen, and perform together more cohesively. Especially useful for ensembles that need to sound more together rather than just better individually.

Contemporary Singing for Classical Ensembles

Helps your choir break out of the constraints of the traditional choral sound when approaching more contemporary repertoire, and adopt more versatile vocal techniques for cross-genre performing.

Singing Without A Safety

A creative group workshop in improvisation, brave singing, and ensemble play. Designed to break down the barriers around confident performing through games and creative exercises, in a supportive and open-minded setting.
